I just wanted to make sure I understand the topics and assignments. We should read through (and watch) the materials in each topic folder before doing the homework for that topic, so the due dates for the homeworks are a guide for when we should have the materials read? (With the exception of Topic 3, since that specifies the breakdown.) And, since there is no homework for Topic 2, we should work on that within the next week at most?
It's so interesting how each professor structures the online courses differently - it's crazy to see how our whole course is already laid out for us! It gives us a good idea of what to plan for and expect, so thank you for doing so!

I had a question about setting up a Terp account. I went to Homework one and clicked the instructions link, clicked on existing student, but when it takes me to the service activation page it says Terpconnect has been activated and will be available in 1-3 days but when i hit submit it says I haven't selected anything, and when I click on the Terp Accounts in the Course Material section only find a research application for Grace which it says we don't need. As far as its telling me I have a terp account but I didn't do anything for it, so I wanted since Terp will obviously be a big part of this course, I wanted to make sure I set it up right.

I tried to install Fugu (I have a Mac) using the instructions on the ITSC page (which I apparently can't link to) and the fish icon has a circle-and-cross icon over it. I put it in my apps folder but when I try to open it it says "PowerPC applications are no longer supported." Should I contact IT about this issue? I am curious if anyone else has a Mac and has a similar experience?
TextWrangler seems to be working fine though, so that's good news.

The F-Secure SSH link leads to a page that's been retired. I tried searching for it, but didn't come up with anything.

I have a question for our exercises. I'm a little confused on how to do the ones for time. For the second one, for the harddrive where it says Latency of disk space, for the harddrive does that mean we use the 10ms for 200 GB? Because I covered my answer to GB for the conversion and I wanted to check that.
Also how long is overnight mail? its not stated in Question 4.
Also, will we at any time next week after we've completed and handed in these exercises be going over them? I would like to make sure I'm doing them correctly.

I found this on the UMD IT site: www.itsc.umd.edu/MRcgi/MRTicketPage.pl?USER=&MRP=0&PROJECTID=1&MR=6326 that has a link to a different FTP client called Fetch. I am currently waiting for approval of my application, but I have high hopes.

Hi, ALl,
I responded to all your messages, but it looks like it didn't post. Here are answers again:
OIT can help with any problems with FTP or accounts. I updated the link to go to the new FTP client. Sorry the other one didn't work (it was working for my winter term class just 3 weeks ago!)
Overnight mail takes overnight. You can decide what a drop off and delivery time are. I will be posting a key for the exercises after I've graded everyone's.
Overall, you should generally review the material before attempting the exercises. However, read the exercises first. Topics 3 and 5 are designed to be covered over several weeks. If you check out the exercises first you will know when you have covered enough material in the lectures to be able to complete them.

Thank you for answering my question regardless, Dr Golbeck.
I've gone over the website and found the lectures and exercises helpful. I was a little confused about the HTML one at first, but I'm assuming we'll cover the HTML basics in lecture one on Monday so I'm not worried. But I did have a question: you mentioned discussions will be part of this course so when a discussion is opened will there be a new topic tab for it in the General post section? And if do will there be one for HTML since, as you said, section 3 will take a few weeks?
Over all I look forward to taking this class, since it seems we'll be learning a lot about web design which I've always been interested in.

The discussion topics are already posted here in the forum. Whenever you get to those assignments, you can respond to the threads I've started. Some people move through the material more quickly, but all the deadlines are posted in the assignments section of the website.

Hey Dr Golbeck, I have a question about terpconnect. I finished my first homework assignment, double-checked it and got all the images working, however when I uploaded it on terpconnect, I followed the directions like it said, but when i opened it to check it, none of the images came up only the title-tags I made for them, but when i open it in desk top the images come up fine and I double-checked the html settings and I couldn't find any mistakes. I have windows so i used Windows SCP to move it, and every time I do no matter what settings I try and use it doesn't transfer the pictures: it goes from 6,480 size to 6, 378. I don't know what the pictures aren't being transferred because I double-checked them in HTML and on the desktop and they're fine, is there are problem with my Windows SCP? And how can I get it to transfer the image?

For specific questions like this, it's better to email me. This forum is good for general class questions.
However, this is pretty common. Usually, it is for 1 or 3 reasons: -You didn't upload your images -The capitalization in your image names doesn't match what's in the HTML file -You have a space in the file name
If any of you have problems with your pages, please email me and include a link to the broken page so I can check it.
